Do You Like Your Current Job?

sad-girlWho likes to answer that question? Or, how many people answer with an enthusiastic yes or even a grumbling yes? Did you know that around 85% of employees worldwide hate their job (according to a Galloup poll that was held in September 2017)?

Just think about it, you spend at least 8 hours per day, five – and sometimes even six – days a week, doing something you don’t like. That’s a lot of time and energy that you could spend on something more enjoyable.

Easy for me to say, right? Some of us have responsibilities, a family to feed, and bills to pay. I get it, I also got my own bills; so believe me, I know what it’s like. I have done jobs I didn’t like and I know the feeling. For a while I was also stuck in a repetitive 9 to 5 schedule, but not for long. I felt so restricted that I went looking for something else.

Why Do People Always Ask That Same Question?

What is always one of the first things people ask when meeting someone? “What do you do?” There, that’s the moment to impress with a cool job, right? You can tell them that you’re an engineer and in return get an approving nod. An architect, an onsite supervisor, an accountant, a project assistant, and so on. “Oh, wonderful, that’s really great.”

“What do you do?” can become quite the dreaded question if you think that you don’t have an garbageimpressive job, or if it is about someone who is close to you, let’s say a boy/girlfriend who doesn’t have a high-paying employment. “What does he/she do?” “Oh, uh, he … washes cars …” “she cleans bathrooms …”

What kind of world are we living in if we have to be ashamed of what we or our loved ones do for a living, if a mere job should earn us some sort of respect from strangers?

Why do we feel we have to give some sort of explanation if we have to admit to a less impressive job? Why is that such an important question that we always get when we meet new people?

Does Our Job Truly Define Who We Are …?

We spend so much time at work that it ends up defining us. Most people choose careers at a young age, not realizing that this is something they will do for most of their lives.

So, it’s best to choose a career path that you are truly interested in, and not because it is impressive, or it pays well, or because your father and grandfather had the same work and expect you to follow in their footsteps.

I think it is a little sad that work is supposed to define who we are, when there is so much more to us that characterizes us as human beings.

Why do People Hate Their Jobs?

There are several reasons, and over the last years it just seems to be getting worse. Thinking of the frequent question we get when we meet someone new, it nearly seems expected of us to have a career that we can show off with. I know that doesn’t apply for everyone, but it does for many.

But what makes people dissatisfied with what they do for a living?

  • Many workers claim that they aren’t paid enough, making them live from paycheck to paycheck.
  • Workers feel unappreciated
  • No social life
  • Bosses don’t delegate work load evenly

Not Paid Enough? Time To Make a Change

If you chose a career you absolutely love then you may be willing to accept a lower pay. I, for example, was a high school teacher in Los Cabos, Mexico. Teachers in Mexico do not make much money, and the only reason I did this for over twelve years is due to my love for my students.

I loved spending time with them, teaching, and also learning from them. When you teach you learn, and being with my students I also learned a lot about myself.

I did, however, live from paycheck to paycheck and that was often very tough, especially if I had an emergency, when I wanted to treat myself, or when I started building my house.

I took on an extra job, but I ended up getting stressed and overworked. So, the answer for me was online. There are many ways to make money online.

Unfortunately, the internet is teeming with scams, eager to rip you off of your hard-earned money. You have to be careful, and it took me a while before I found my way to make money online. I’ll tell you more about that at the end of my article.

Are You Feeling Unappreciated?

I know that feeling … It is extremely frustrating when your boss doesn’t seem to appreciate you, when he or she is constantly criticizing you for this or that while being blind to all your accomplishments and the good things you’ve done for the company, school, business, or any other workplace.

It is hard when you achieve company goals and instead of a thank you for all the extra hours and hard work you put in, you receive a higher workload. It often happened at the school I was working at.

I Forgot What the Local Bar Looks Like

It’s important to have a social life, and if your work sucks up all your free time, then what is left for you? Regardless wether you hate or love your job, you must have free time. As soon as you leave the office, you are no longer available to anyone from the office, unless they’re inviting you for a (social) evening out. There can be no phone calls after work hours to solve some urgent issues. Some things can wait until tomorrow.

We need to be able to unwind, relax, and have some time for ourselves, friends, and family. If your work makes you unhappy, why would you sacrifice the little happiness you have left in your free time for a job (and a boss) you abhor? This is your life and the only one in charge of your life is you, not your boss.

Drop That Work Load Like a Sack of Potatoes

stressedWell, not literally, but don’t overwork yourself either. Been there, done that. In 2016 I ended up with burnout … I was unable to function properly, I couldn’t even work anymore, sometimes I forgot how to do the simplest functions, like changing gears when driving, adding the right ingredients while cooking, or even texting. Burn out affected me mentally and physically.

I didn’t get really ill, thank goodness, but due to tensional cephalia (an inflammation of the brain muscles, which causes constant pain) my hair got so brittle and broken that I had to shave it off. I was fortunate, because it was only my hair, and hair grows back. Other people are less lucky and they end up with serious illnesses.

The mind and body are connected and when one of them breaks down, the other one is often affected. That was, at least, my experience.

In 2018 I healed from burn out. My hair has grown back nicely 🙂 And I have vowed never to let it come to burn out again. I am taking care of myself now. And so should you.

The Online World Can Be Your Oyster

What did I do? After long research and weeding out the scams and shady companies, I found Wealthy Affiliate in March 2019. When I realized that I could sign up for free without giving my address or credit card information, I was relieved. That was definitely a good sign!

As soon as I was a free member, I took a tour of their website and I liked what I saw: good and organized training, live webinars, an active member community, a personal welcome from Kyle, one of the founders of Wealthy Affiliate, and the possibility to contact him at any time, tools and help to set up a website, 1000’s of themes for your website, a research tool, online site support, and the possibility of truly creating my own business.

After one class I had already set up my first website and gained much new knowledge. After only a week I became a Premium member, which ended up being the best thing I did in 2019. I haven’t looked back since then.

What I like about Wealthy Affiliate is their honesty. They do not make false promises of quick money; on the contrary, they tell you that it takes time, effort, and dedication to make money online.

The founders, Kyle and Carson, admit that their program is not for everyone, but if you are committed, then Wealthy Affiliate is definitely for you. Just think of all the time and sweat you have put into your current job … If you could put in that same effort for your own business, you would finally reap the rewards of all your hard work.

  1. I know that 85% people hate their jobs because I am one of them. I do not hate my job as I used to hate it now because I have a bigger goal in my life where I want to build my own business online and no more working for some bosses for a scrap of money. Let us all get out of this 9-5 grind and build a better future for us all. I know that Wealthy Affiliate can help us because it has helped me.

    Cheers!

  2. Man was born free. Anyone or anyone losing their freedom, leads to hatred. Why should we be surprised that a substantial percentage of the working population hates their job? Especially if he works seriously but is not appreciated. For those who want freedom WA is ideal. It takes a lot of work and patience. But if you still work, why not do it for yourself. Thanks for posting.

    1. Wasn’t it Rousseau who said “Man was born free, but everywhere he is in chains”? Great quote, and I agree, why not work for yourself? Nowadays, there are plenty of opportunities available online, and Wealthy Affiliate is a great help for anyone who is serious about starting their own business.

  3. Hi Christine

Thanks so much for sharing a good article to read, I must say I don’t like my current job and I was looking for a way to find something better as a job for me.

It’s hard to find a job where I feel I’m doing something important or something to make this world better. I see you lived in Mexico, my homeland (currently living in Canada) and you were working there as a teacher, you really might loved your job there.

The way you described how you were feeling in 2016, it’s the way many people feel about their lives and about their jobs, it’s so sad to see that happening today. My husband was telling me about I should do something to share on the internet to see if I can start making some money from it.

I will take a look to Wealthy Affiliate, my husband was telling me he has seen this name often on the internet and today we both would like to know more about it. Thanks for sharing the link.

    1. Hello Alejandra,

I still live in Mexico and I love your homeland 🙂

Your husband has a good point, do something online to make money, there are endless possibilities. And yes, check out the Wealthy Affiliate platform, they have so much valuable information, training, support, and tools, and the best thing is that you can sign up for free.

  4. Hi Christine,
I think the best part of Wealthy Affiliate is the world-famous friendly community compared to other legitimate affiliate marketing platforms on the internet.

I find another key factor that people can’t make it simply because they don’t have someone or mentors to talk to like the social part in this post. I always think if you meet problem and find someone who could help you, and you will be okay to keep going. Right?

Anyway, I LOVE the way you mentioned we should not be defined only by our jobs, yes, totally. Will definitely come back for more articles from you.

    Cheers,
    Matt

    1. Hi Matt,

I agree that you can always find a mentor on the Wealthy Affiliate platform. The community is unlike any other I have ever seen. It’s quite unique 🙂
